April 20th is the perfect reason to visit a dispensary that has been part of the community for a decade. This year, OG Collective is celebrating ten years of Oregon-grown cannabis alongside their annual 4/20 deals, and the timing couldn’t be more fitting!
The Origins of 4/20: How the Cannabis Holiday Began
In 1971, a group of five high school students in San Rafael, California, who called themselves the “Waldos,” began meeting at 4:20 p.m. after school. Their plan: search for an abandoned cannabis crop rumored to be growing nearby. The time became their code, “4:20 Louis,” later shortened simply to “420.”
The term might have stayed local if not for the Waldos’ connections to the Grateful Dead community, which helped spread it through music and counterculture networks. By 1991, High Times magazine had picked up the term and linked both the number and April 20 as a cannabis reference point, giving the 4/20 meaning a wider cultural stage.
Several myths have circulated over the years, like claims about police radio codes or song numerology, but the Waldos’ account has the strongest documentation and is cited in the Oxford English Dictionary.
By the early 1990s, cannabis gatherings began anchoring April 20 as an annual community day, and events in cities like San Francisco held through the mid-to-late 1990s helped cement the 4/20 cannabis holiday as the recognizable occasion it is today.
OG Collective’s 10-Year Anniversary: A Decade Rooted in Oregon
OG Collective’s Hawthorne Avenue location in Salem opened in April 2016. Ten years later, every other location in their network (Commercial Street, Liberty Street, Cross Street, and West Salem in Salem; Pacific Hwy in Monmouth; and NW 4th Street in Corvallis) is marking that milestone together on April 20, 2026.
This kind of longevity in Oregon’s cannabis market reflects something real: consistent quality, genuine community investment, and a commitment to keeping the product honest from cultivation to shelf. OG grows in-house, which means full control over purity, potency, and consistency.Â
